It is unusual for a Hereford wedding photographer to get the chance to photograph a Ukrainian wedding here in the UK, but on the 1st August this year we were grateful to have this opportunity. Both Rich and I love discovering new cultures and their traditions so it was a real joy to have the opportunity to photograph an ethnic wedding here so close to us. We respect every couple’s choice of faith and belief be they humanist, pagan, christian or other and it will always be a privilege to photograph their wedding day as it is, truly representing the couple.
Tanya and Nazarii’s wedding has been full of joy and dancing and the most wonderful Ukrainian wedding traditions, at least the ones they managed to recreate here in the UK. We learnt about korovai (wedding kneaded bread), rushnyk (embroidered towel), blahoslovenya (blessing) and the most popular “Girko! Girko! Girko!“, which basically is an invitation made to the couple multiple times throughout the night to stand up and kiss to “make things sweeter (in life)”. For the ceremony we drove to Gloucester to the Ukrainian Church of the Good Shepherd and then we all came back to the Amber Coast Restaurant in Hereford for the party, games and dancing, again specific to their native country. It was a very entertaining after party, with cheer, laughter, singing, traditional Ukrainian dances, hugs and a few happy tears here and there, which we would love to share with you below. Mnohaya lita, Tanya and Nazarii!
