Venue Spotlight: Broadfield Court, Herefordshire
There are some wedding venues that immediately invite you to slow down.
Not in a dramatic, grand way, but rather in a quieter sense. The kind of place where you arrive, take a breath, and feel like you have space to settle in. Broadfield Court is one of those places.
Set in the Herefordshire countryside, Broadfield Court is a family-run, exclusive-use wedding venue. Moreover, it lends itself beautifully to relaxed, multi-day celebrations. Over the years, I have photographed a number of weddings here, and it is always a joy to return. Indeed, every wedding feels different, yet there is a consistency in atmosphere. As a result, the day feels calm, considered, and genuinely personal.
As part of my Venue Spotlight series, I talked with Frances, the director of the Broadfield Court, about what makes weddings here so special. In fact, couples often describe it as feeling more like a private country house weekend than a traditional wedding day.

A truly exclusive-use wedding venue
One of the things that sets Broadfield Court apart is that it is purely exclusive use.
When couples book Broadfield Court, they are not sharing the space with anyone else. Instead, the venue becomes theirs for the duration of their celebrations, typically from Friday lunchtime through to Sunday. Consequently, this gives couples the rare opportunity to have a wedding that unfolds over time. In other words, it doesn’t have to be confined to a single, tightly scheduled day.
There are nine bedrooms within the house. Additionally, it has a collection of beautiful reception rooms that allow everyone to spread out and feel at home. Furthermore, at Broadfield Court you can also use their three bedroomed coach house. This can be hired to accommodate even more guests on site. Friends and family arrive, settle in, and share a meal together on the Friday evening. Then, they wake up the next morning already immersed in the wedding atmosphere. From a photography point of view, this makes an enormous difference. As a result, the day begins gently, without the rush or nervous energy that can sometimes come with travel and tight timings.
As Frances explained, this structure allows couples to enjoy not just their wedding day, but the full experience around it. This includes dinner the night before, the wedding day itself, and often a relaxed brunch the following morning. Overall, it feels unhurried and thoughtful. Importantly, that tone carries through the entire weekend.
A setting that encourages relaxed weddings
Broadfield Court offers a wonderful balance of elegance and informality. Undeniably, it is a beautiful country estate, yet it never feels formal or imposing. Instead, the house, gardens, and grounds are designed to be used and enjoyed, not just admired from a distance.
Couples have access to the gardens, lawns, orchard, woodland, rose garden, and fold yard. All of these can be used in different ways depending on the size and style of the wedding. In particular, many ceremonies take place outdoors. As a result, this creates a natural, open feel to the day and allows guests to move freely between spaces.
From small, intimate weddings of around 15 guests through to celebrations of up to around 170 people, Broadfield Court adapts easily. Typically, smaller weddings often make full use of the house itself. For instance, ceremonies take place in the inner hall, dining in the dining room, and evenings are spent in the bar. In contrast, larger weddings tend to incorporate marquees, tipis, or other structures set within the gardens. These provide space for dining and dancing while still feeling connected to the outdoors.
One of the strengths of the venue is how well it accommodates changing weather. For example, outdoor ceremonies are always planned with flexibility in mind. Moreover, for larger weddings, covered structures can host ceremonies while still allowing couples and guests to enjoy the gardens. In essence, it means couples are protected from both strong sun and rain without losing that outdoor atmosphere.
Personal weddings, shaped around the couple
During our conversation, Frances mentioned three words that she feels sum up weddings at Broadfield Court: personal, flexible, and relaxed.
That sense of personal connection is evident throughout the planning process. Notably, Broadfield Court hosts a limited number of weddings each year. As a result, this allows the team to genuinely get to know their couples. From initial viewings and enquiries through to the wedding day itself, there is a continuity of care. Importantly, this comes from being a family-run venue.
In fact, it is not unusual for couples to stay in touch with the team long after their wedding has taken place. They share updates about their lives and families. Ultimately, that ongoing relationship says a great deal about the experience couples have here.
As a photographer, I notice this on the day itself. Couples feel comfortable. Furthermore, they trust the people around them. As a result, there is less formality, less pressure to perform, and more space to simply enjoy being together with the people they love.
Flexibility without compromise
Broadfield Court offers couples an impressive level of flexibility when it comes to shaping their wedding.
There are no strict supplier lists. Therefore, couples are free to choose the catering, structures, and creative partners that suit them best. Over the years, the venue has hosted everything from fine dining menus and sharing platters to street food vans and international cuisine. For example, one recent wedding even featured a Nigerian-Korean fusion menu, while another brought an Argentinian barbecue all the way from London.
That freedom allows couples to create a wedding that feels truly reflective of who they are. In other words, it means they’re not restricted to a fixed formula.
At the same time, for couples who want guidance and support, Broadfield Court offers full event planning and coordination. Through meetings, discussions, and careful planning, everything runs smoothly. However, this still allows couples to feel in control of the creative direction.
Overall, it is a thoughtful balance between structure and freedom. In particular, this works well for couples who want a wedding that feels personal without being overwhelming to plan.
A relaxed atmosphere that shows in the photographs
The word “relaxed” came up more than once during our conversation. Indeed, it is perhaps the quality that stands out most clearly in the photographs I took at Broadfield Court.
Thanks to the fact that couples and their closest family and friends often arrive the day before, the wedding morning feels calmer. As a result, there is time to talk, to laugh, and to enjoy the anticipation of the day rather than rushing through it. Importantly, that sense of ease translates directly into the images.
Moments unfold naturally. Guests are already comfortable in the space. Meanwhile, children play in the gardens. Similarly, conversations happen in corners of the house or under trees. These are the kinds of moments I am drawn to photograph. In fact, Broadfield Court creates an environment where they happen organically.
The venue never feels stiff or overly formal. Instead, it encourages people to be present, to enjoy themselves, and to focus on what the celebration is really about.
Why Broadfield Court works so well for photography
From a practical point of view, Broadfield Court is a wonderful venue to photograph.
The variety of indoor and outdoor spaces allows for flexibility throughout the day, whatever the weather. The gardens provide beautiful, natural backdrops. Meanwhile, the house offers elegant interiors with character and warmth. Because couples and guests are on site for the duration, there is no need to rush between locations. As a result, this keeps the flow of the day feeling natural.
Light changes throughout the grounds. Consequently, this creates opportunities for different moods and moments as the day progresses. Quiet corners for intimate portraits, open lawns for group celebrations, and relaxed evening spaces for dancing and conversation all coexist within the same setting.
Every time I photograph a wedding here, it feels slightly different. It’s shaped by the couple’s choices and personalities, yet always grounded in the same sense of ease.
A venue designed for meaningful celebrations
Broadfield Court is not about ticking boxes or following trends. Rather, it is about creating space for meaningful celebrations to unfold over time.
Whether couples choose an intimate indoor gathering or a larger outdoor celebration, the venue adapts to them. Overall, the focus remains on connection, enjoyment, and the experience of being together. It’s not about formality or spectacle.
It is easy to see why so many couples are drawn to Broadfield Court. Furthermore, it’s also clear why those who celebrate here often speak so fondly of the experience long after their wedding weekend has ended.
